Dr. Christina Lampe-Onnerud, PhD
Boston-Power, Inc.
Westborough, Mass.
Venturing boldly into a field dominated by established multibillion-dollar battery manufacturers, Dr. Christina Lampe-Onnerud launched Boston-Power, Inc. in 2006 in a carriage house on her own property in Framingham, Mass. Her vision to develop a safer, more reliable and environmentally friendly portable battery for laptop computers culminated in the development of the company’s Sonata product.
Before striking out on her own, Dr. Lampe-Onnerud served as one of only two female partners at Arthur W. Little, where she headed up TIAX battery labs, the largest operation of its kind not owned by a battery manufacturer. The reputation she earned
at TIAX enabled her to raise $125 million from venture capital firms, assemble a high-powered team and establish a global manufacturing and supply chain.
Within two years, she more than doubled the size of the company and won a contract to supply Hewlett-Packard with the Sonata battery, the first rechargeable lithium/ion battery in the world to receive Nordic Ecolabel accreditation as an environmentally sustainable product.
Looking to the future, Dr. Lampe-Onnerud plans to enhance her company’s laptop battery product line and focus on developing lithium/ion-based solutions for other industries, including large-format batteries for automotive transformation.
